Review and Buying Guide of TP-LINK TL-SG2008 8-Port Gigabit Smart Switch

Uncomplicated to established up – will help to know a little bit. Does the job, quick to established up – helps to know a bit about ip, and networking, but then all over again you wouldn’t be obtaining this product if you did not.

I have acquired one of these & the equivalent netgear of close to the exact cost, this is considerably much more aspect rich & just is effective. Applying the vlan performance – trunking from another switch & presenting the two port dependent & trunked vlans to products related to it.

I shall continue to keep it small and sweet but for the cash you actually simply cannot defeat this switch. It is straightforward to use out of the box, anything will default to vlan1 and function just like a switch must. Don’t forget, vlan’s are locally major to a switch so you can use this to lengthen your flat network extremely quickly. Nonetheless, the electrical power of this switch truly out strips the 40 pound price tag. Vlan trunking, qos, port protection, spanning tree, 802. 1x – this switch has an considerable and spectacular checklist of features. I have bought two of these, originally i mounted 1 in the dwelling area to get replace my asus rt-n66u as a switch/wifi as the vlan setup on that was a slight bodge (another story). I’ve because bought a further to operate around to my desk in the business office and lengthen the community from the main switch that i have. (i’m a community engineer by trade and do a ton of follow labs at residence, so you should bear in brain i probably never have the typical consumer use circumstance state of affairs).

Cheap switch with pretty much all of the feature you can find an a more expensive product. . Cheap switch with pretty much all of the feature you can find an a more expensive product. The only odd thing – that i personally did not like – is the system led that blinks continuously. That the expected behaviour as proof of everything running as expected, i would have preferred an always on led.

Vlans & igmp-snooping for cheap. Cheapest managed 8-port gige switch that i could find. As a general purpose switch, it works well enough. But it really comes into it’s own if you need vlan tagging & trunking, and care about stuff like multicast and igmp. I wish it had a 10gb uplink port, but i’m probably dreaming at this price-point. Oh, and it’s even 12vdc driven – with external psu – exactly what i needed.

I shall keep it short and sweet but for the money you really cannot beat this switch. It is simple to use out of the box, everything will default to vlan1 and operate just like a switch should. Remember, vlan’s are locally significant to a switch so you can use this to extend your flat network very easily. However, the power of this switch really out strips the 40 pound price tag. Vlan trunking, qos, port security, spanning tree, 802. 1x – this switch has an extensive and impressive list of features. I have bought two of these, originally i installed one in the living room to get replace my asus rt-n66u as a switch/wifi as the vlan setup on that was a slight bodge (another story). I’ve since bought another to run around to my desk in the office and extend the network from the core switch that i have. (i’m a network engineer by trade and do a lot of practice labs at home, so please bear in mind i probably don’t have the typical consumer use case scenario).

Impressive bit of kit for this price. For the price, this switch is totally amazing valueyou can use it as a plug and play switch, but has lots of functionality available to it such as a web based management interface, rmon, snmp etc. For those who need more monitoring and management functions. The switch was configured with the same ip address as my router, so that had to be changed immediately. Web interface to the rescue, using a cat 6 cable plugged directly into a windows 10 laptop. Web interface is very well laid out and intuitive. The switch is also “green” and has power saving features. I’m very impressed with this unit and now have all my av kit plugged into it. So far it’s been running for about 24 hours and i’ve not noticed any issues at all.

I’ve got one of these & the equivalent netgear of around the same price, this is far more feature rich & just works. Using the vlan functionality – trunking from another switch & presenting both port based & trunked vlans to devices connected to it.

Easy to set up – helps to know a bit. Does the job, easy to set up – helps to know a bit about ip, and networking, but then again you wouldn’t be buying this product if you didn’t.

Oid firmware, but very good. It’s not possible to buy any other switch as advanced as this one for less than £100. Lacp, arp inspection, dos protection, multicast, qos, acl, vlans, it has everythingthe firmware that came bundled was very old, though – and it has the slight problem of – when you update firmware – it resets to the default ip, so make sure you back up config, upgrade firmware, then quickly setup a laptop to restore the config. This process could be improved, but it’s still a very good purchase.

Great little switch, does all it needs to do (for more advanced users), and has a wealth of features. Very easy to set up and use, but if like me you like to manage your hardware and do a little bit of configuration, the management screen is clear and easy to use. Unlike a lot of so called “managed” switches, you access the device management functions via a browser (which is how it should be imo), so is not platform specific.

Proper web management for basic networking configs. Good value at £40 and a huge leap up from the non managed and windows app managed units and for not a great deal more. Ordered the sg108e which was hopeless. Replaced it with this and not looked back.

Me likey this cheap smart switch. Since nobody has written a review of this i thought i’d have a go. :-/this is a fanless, metal cased, switch about 8″x5″x1″ in size. It has an array of leds on the front that display power, system status, link speed(orange -100mb, green – 1000mb), and activity. Power is supplied by a external transformer. On the back are eight gigabit ports and the power connector. It takes about 45 seconds to boot up when turned on at which point you can access the web interface(ssh access has to be specifically allowed via a config page). The user manual for the web config options is on the tp-link site. Perhaps more interesting is the command line you can access via ssh which will remind you of using cisco ios, i guess the cli manual for the tl-sg3210 may be some help here – also on the tp-link site. According to the sticker on the box this item comes with a “limited lifetime warranty” (product warranty ends five years after tp-link uk ltd discontinues sales of that product).
